Workshop registration ´ECOPRINT! 2.0´ - Laura Dell’Erba
Theme of the class: many consider ecoprinting as an evolution of the traditional methods of natural dyeing. However, while for the latter you mordant the fabric and then you put it into a decoction of plants or into a bath of dyeing extracts, in the eco-printing process dye plants (as well as plants that are not traditionally used for dyeing) are directly applied to the fabric that you want to dye or print.
During this workshop, which is the evolution of the one we already hosted in November 2016, you will learn the basics of ecoprinting, (so it is also suitable for beginners), but you will also explore new mordanting techniques for wool and silk. You will have a chance to experiment with techniques combining ecoprint, shibori and tie-dye, as well as with some inks of vegetable origin.
More specifically, these are the topics we are going to deal with:
• general introduction to natural dyes
• Ecoprinting as a sustainable dyeing technique
• preparing and mordanting (including cold mordanting) fabrics
• preparing dye baths
• dye plants and plants for eco-printing
• using metals and vinegar-based preparations
• preparing dye rolls
• cooking and unfolding dye rolls
• color variations and possible solutions
• double dyes, base dye using extracts and overlapping
• drying and washing
• recycling dye baths
• how to take care of naturally dyed clothes and fabrics
• techniques combining ecoprint, tie-dye and shibori
• preparation and use of inks for eco-printed fabrics
