What is a Blown yarn?
A blown yarn is a special type of yarn created by blowing loose fibers into a pre-existing fine mesh tube. This unique construction results in a yarn that’s incredibly soft, airy, and fluffy. The fibers are gently trapped inside the tube, with their ends peeking out to form a beautiful halo effect.
Here’s a closer look at how it works:
• Mesh Tube: at the core of a blown yarn is a very fine mesh tube, often made of polyamide (nylon), which provides structure and elasticity.
• Fiber Filling: loose fibers — such as wool, alpaca, or other blends — are blown into the tube, filling it evenly.
• Adhesion: the fibers adhere inside the mesh without the need for spinning, creating a lightweight yet voluminous yarn.
• Texture & Look: the ends of the fibers remain slightly exposed, which gives the yarn its signature soft and fluffy feel with a delicate halo.
Why choose Blown yarn?
Blown yarns offer several advantages:
• they're soft and gentle on the skin
• they’re lightweight but warm
• you get excellent yardage (more length per gram)
• they’re easy to work with and create a distinctive, modern look in both knitting and crochet.
Whether you're going for cozy garments or airy accessories, blown yarns are a great choice for style and comfort.
It is perfect for creating both accessories and articles of clothing. It is unisex.
Techniques
Sierra can be worked with large knitting needles and crochet hooks. It's also suitable for weaving, embroidery, tufting and needlepunch.
Tips
With knitting needles: Stockinette stitch and ribbed patterns, whether smooth or textured, look stunning.
With a crochet hook: The ideal stitch is single crochet. The loop stitch in raised fur-like texture works perfectly too.
On the loom: we wove this yarn on a rigid heddle loom with a 24:10 reed (2.4 ends/cm). This yarn is strong and easy to weave, perfect for both warp and weft. The final fabric is soft, warm, and ideal for fashion projects, blankets, runners, or cushions. The fringes created with this yarn are especially lovely.
