Can't decide between an openwork pattern, a sheer effect, or simple stockinette stitch? Here’s the perfect solution! This vest features an upper section that looks like delicate lacework and a lower section with a texture reminiscent of woven fabric. This is an easy pattern that combines softness and style beautifully.
All this beauty is made possible by Cumbria, an alpaca yarn spun with three plies: two ultra-thin strands form the core, while a third, super-fine and fluffy strand adds volume, creating a texture as airy as cotton candy. The finished fabric will have a wonderfully irregular texture.
Now, choose your favorite shade of Cumbria and get started on your vest!

METHOD
The vest is knitted flat in two separate pieces: the back and the front. The neckline and armhole borders are added afterward by picking up stitches.

Using knitting needles n° 6.5 EU / 10½ US, cast on 51 (55, 61) stitches.
Row 1: (1 purl, 1 knit) repeat until the last stitch, purl the last stitch
row 2: knit the first stitch, then (1 purl, 1 knit) repeat to the end of the row.
These two rows establish the 1/1 rib pattern for the lower border. Repeat them 2 more times for a total of 6 rows, reaching a height of 3 cm / 1.2".
Switch to stockinette stitch and continue for 64 (66, 68) rows, reaching 41 (42, 43) cm / 16.1" (16.5", 17") in total length.

Shaping the Armholes
Row 71 (73, 75): bind off 4 stitches at the beginning, work in elongated stitch to the last 4 stitches, bind off the last 4 stitches
row 72 (74, 76): work in elongated stitch across
row 73 (75, 77): bind off 1 stitch at the beginning, work in elongated stitch to the last stitch, bind off 1 stitch at the end
row 74 (76, 78): work in elongated stitch across.
Repeat rows 73 and 74 (75 and 76, 77 and 78) 2 (2, 3) more times to complete the armhole shaping. Continue working in elongated stitch without decreases until the armhole measures 21 (22, 23) cm / 8.3" (8.7", 9"). Bind off all stitches.

Using knitting needles n° 6.5 EU / 10½ US, cast on 51 (55, 61) stitches and follow the same instructions as the back until the armhole shaping measures 15 (16, 17) cm / 6" (6.3", 6.7").
Shaping the Neckline
Row 1: work in elongated stitch over the first 13 (14, 15) stitches, bind off the next 11 (13, 15) stitches for the neckline, work in elongated stitch over the remaining 13 (14, 15) stitches
row 2: work in elongated stitch over the 13 (14, 15) stitches on the second side. Leave the stitches from the first side on a stitch holder
row 3: bind off 1 stitch at the beginning of the row for neckline shaping, work to the end in elongated stitch
row 4: work in elongated stitch across.
Repeat rows 3 and 4 4 more times, leaving 8 (9, 10) stitches on the needle. Bind off.
Return to the first side and repeat the same shaping in reverse.

Sew one shoulder seam.
Neckline Border
Using knitting needles n° 6.5 EU / 10½ US, pick up an even number of stitches around the neckline and work 8 rows in 1/1 rib. Bind off all stitches, then sew the neckline border and the other shoulder seam.
Armhole Borders
Using knitting needles n° 6.5 EU / 10½ US, pick up an even number of stitches around each armhole and work 6 rows in 1/1 rib. Bind off all stitches, then sew the armhole borders.
Sew the side seams.
