Calendula is a quintessential Italian officinalis plant. It also goes by the name of Marigold because of its distinguishing bright orange colour. Its flowers are really pretty and even healing, as a matter of fact they are used primarily to soothe irritated skin and as an anti-inflammatory too.
We want to honour this amazing flower today by making a crochet calendula which can be used in loads of different ways: as a keyring, a centrepiece or as something to decorate a top or a bag.
We’ve chosen the Lincoln yarn in the color Rust for this calendula. With a 100% cotton composition, shininess and slenderness, we thought it was the ideal one to give the flower a radiant and cheery look.
Let's start.
METHOD
Cast on 10 chains and work as follows:
Round 1: chain 4 (initial double crochet + 1 chain), skip 4 chains from the hook (double crochet 1 in the following chain, chain 2, skip 2 chains) 3 times, in the last chain worked: double crochet 1, chain 1 and 1 double crochet. Knit in rounds of back and forth
round 2: 5 chains (initial double crochet + 2 chains), skip the arch of the following chain, (double crochet 1 in the following double crochet, chain 2, skip the arch of 2 chains) 3 times, double crochet 1 in the following double crochet, chain 2, skip the arch of 1 chain, double crochet 1 on the 3rd one of the initial chains of the previous round
round 3: chain 5 (initial double crochet + 2 chains) skip the arch of the following 2 chains (1 double crochet in the following double crochet, chain 2, skip the arch of 2 chains) 4
times, double crochet 1 on the 3rd one of the initial chains of the previous round
round 4: chain 4 (initial double crochet + 1 chain) skip the arch of the following 2 chains, (1 double crochet on the following double crochet, chain 2, skip the arch of 2 chains) 3 times, double crochet 1 on the following double crochet, chain 1, skip the arch of 2 chains, double crochet 1 on the 3rd one of the initial chains of the previous round
round 5: chain 3 (initial double crochet), skip the arch of 1 following chain, (double crochet 1 on the following double crochet, chain 2, skip the arch of 2 chains) 3 times, 1 double open crochet on the following double crochet, skip the arch of 1 chain, 1 double open crochet on the 3rd one of the initial chain of the previous round. Don’t turn the work over and proceed in the round
round 6: chain 3 (initial double crochet), double crochet 4 around the last worked double crochet, double crochet 3 around each of the 3 following stitches, double crochet 4 around the final stitch of the 1st round, double crochet 1 at the bottom of the same stitch, (double crochet 2 in the arch of 2 chains, double crochet 1 at the bottom of the following double crochet) 3 times, double crochet 4 around the initial stitch of the 1st round, double crochet 3 around each of the following 3 stitches, double crochet 4 around the initial stitch of the 5th round, double crochet 1on the following double crochet, (double crochet 2 in the arch of 2 chains, double crochet 1 on the following double crochet) twice, double crochet 2 in the arch of 2 chains, bind off this one and the following rounds with 1 half stitch in the initial stitch
round 7: chain 17 (initial single crochet + 16 chains), skip 12 chains from the hook, single crochet 1 in the following chain, chain 3, skip 2 double crochets, * single crochet 1 on the following double crochet, chain 16, skip 12 chains from the hook, single crochet 1 in the following chain, chain 3, skip 2 double crochets *, repeat from * to* another 16 times
round 8: using half stitches lead into the ring of 12 chains, chain 3 (initial double crochet), in the ring below work: double crochet 7, chain 3 and double crochet 8; * in the ring of 12 following chains work: 8 double crochet, chain 3 and double crochet 8; * 17 times. At the end of the round break off the thread and blend it into the work.
From the round 1 to round 6 carry out the part given, from the round 7 to round 8 work from A to the 1st asterisk, repeat from * to * 16 times and finish off with the part that comes before A.
