Ruth Packham and the Bergschaf wool shell

Ruth Packham a needle felt extraordinaire

Ruth Packham is a dear friend of ours. She is a woman full of positive energy. She has a smile that always makes you feel welcome, even when we send her emails at midnight to share some crazy project. And above all, Ruth is a needle felt guru.
It is exactly because of her skills with this technique that we got in touch with her a year ago, to ask her to make some video tutorials for us. From that union, 3 videos were born, which are still today some of the most beautiful ever made by DHG. I am going to take this occasion to invite you to watch them again:

Needle Felting  Pills. The ABC's - DHG Tutorials

As you can see, Ruth is a real ace with the needle!

Ruth Packham creates a felt seashell with two friends

However, I am not writing today to tell you about this friendship or this old project, but rather to talk about a new adventure that Ruth and other artists have just embarked on, and in which we are happy to participate, even though our contribution is pretty small.

Ruth Packham has made a felt seashell with the help of two of her friends, Esther Weber and Anu Volp. This project was born from Ruth’s love of the sea and seashells. Ruth is fascinated by the curvy, maze-like shape of these little animals carrying their own house around. While in Oman, she often stopped on the beach to look at hermit crabs, noting the similarities between herself and them, between them and her friends that helped her create this work. In fact, the three of them, just like hemit crabs, carried their homes with them around the world, each choosing to live in a different country than the one they were born in. It is from this love of seashells that this project was born: to create a gigantic seashell out of felt with her 'hermit crab friends’. Never content to stop at only this, she decided to push herslf even further and create a shell on an even bigger scale, from a material other than felt, that allows one to walk through the tight curves of a seashell.  An extraordinary idea that we sure hope will take shape!

Here you will find photos of the majestic, felt shell made, in part, with our Bergschaf wool.

Good job Ruth! We can't wait to see the larger-scale shell too.
