It is said that, at an unknown time, Saint Nicholas saved young sisters from a future of hardship by leaving three bags full of gold outside their house. But this is just one of many legends linked to Christmas stockings and the gifts they can hold. What is certain is that this tradition has been passed down for centuries in many parts of the world and makes Christmas even more special.
Today we offer you three patterns for three Christmas stockings to knit. Two made with Piuma yarn and one with Rain or Shine yarn, both in pure merino wool. You can put them under the tree, hang them on the fireplace, or at the foot of the bed. They are for little ones but also for adults because for certain things we all remain children! Toys, sweets, and all the gifts you can wish for can be placed in stockings, as long as they are not too bulky.

INSTRUCTIONS
The stocking is worked from the top down using circular needles, in the round until the heel, then back and forth in rows, and then again in the round to the toe.
Using circular needles size n° 3 EU / 3 US, cast on 65 stitches, join the last stitch to the first by passing one over the other to work in the round, and place a stitch marker to count rounds more easily.
For the upper edge, work 29 rounds in 1/1 rib, then on the next round work 1/1 rib until the last 2 stitches, then decrease 1 stitch by knitting the last 2 stitches together; you will be at round 30, about 9.5 cm / 3.7", with 63 stitches on the needle. Work 6 rounds in stockinette stitch, then continue with rib and peanut stitch for 59 rounds, reaching round 95.
Round 96: work rib and peanut stitch on the first 32 stitches and place them on a stitch holder for the top of the foot; continue in stockinette stitch on the remaining 31 stitches for the heel. The round numbering ends here. Now work only on the 31 heel stitches in stockinette in back-and-forth rows for 16 rows, about 5 cm / 2". Begin the decreases for the heel
row 17: knit to the last 9 stitches, decrease 1 stitch by slip-knit-pass slipped stitch over on the next 2 stitches, turn work (remaining stitches remain on left needle and are counted in subsequent rows)
row 18: purl to last 8 stitches, decrease 1 stitch by slip-purl-pass slipped stitch over on the next 2 stitches, turn work

Continue as explained in the previous rows, leaving 1 less stitch before each decrease on both knit and purl rows until only 17 stitches remain on the needle. Now knit these 17 heel stitches, then pick up 12 stitches on one side of the heel, then the 32 stitches placed on hold for the top of the foot and 12 stitches on the other side of the heel. Join the last stitch to the first, passing one over the other to work in the round and place a stitch marker for easier round counting.
Work rib and peanut stitch as before on the top of the foot and stockinette on the remaining stitches. At the same time, perform decreases as explained below; for simplicity, round numbering restarts from 1.
Round 1: knit to 2 stitches before the top of the foot stitches, decrease 1 stitch by knitting the next 2 stitches together twisted, work rib and peanut stitch on the 32 top foot stitches, decrease 1 stitch by knitting the next 2 stitches together, continue knitting to end of round
round 2: knit to the top foot stitches, work rib and peanut stitch on the 32 top foot stitches, knit to end of round
rounds 3–10: repeat rounds 1 and 2 nine more times.
Now you have 52 stitches on the needle. Continue working rib and peanut stitch on the top of the foot and stockinette on the other stitches until the foot measures about 14.5 cm / 5.7" from the end of the heel. Place 2 stitch markers at the edges of the top foot stitches, 1 between the 2nd and 3rd stitch and 1 between the third-last and second-last stitch, then start decreases for the toe; the round numbering restarts from 1 for simplicity.
Round 1: knit to 3 stitches before first marker, decrease 1 stitch by knitting the next 2 stitches together, knit the 2 stitches around the marker, decrease 1 stitch by knitting the next 2 stitches together, continue rib and peanut stitch until 3 stitches before second marker, decrease 1 stitch by knitting the next 2 stitches together, knit the 2 stitches around the marker, decrease 1 stitch by knitting the next 2 stitches together, knit to end of round
