Tutorial: how to make a chunky knit blanket

Many of our clients have been buying our extra fine merino wool tops for some time now. To use it as if it was giant sized yarn with needles (giant knitting) or their arms (arm knitting). The results are really surprising especially when you choose to work with several colours of printed tops. An example? How to make a chunky knit blanket

MATERIALS 
Extra Fine Merino Wool Tops col. Madame Matisse – Giverny – Starry Night   9kg / 20 lb
Giant knitting needles – minimum 25 x 500 mm

KNIT-CROCHET STITCHES USED 
Stockinette stitch with stretched loops.

Knit: knit stitch but bringing the yarn forward (as if you were purling – long loop)

Purl: drop the thread that has been twisted on the needle and purl stitch
The result will be a stretched loop and a normal one.


Useful tips

  • First, unwind all the skein gently before starting. In this way, you will avoid putting tension on the wool tops and breaking them while working.
  • Never cut the wool tops with scissors, instead pull the end of the fibre with your hands. Just pull it slightly keeping the ribbon straight without twisting it and always keeping your hands at least 20cm apart from each other
  • In case the wool tops tear whilst working, overlap the two pieces by 15cm and comb them gently with your fingers to even out the fibres and blend them together. Then twist them slightly and resume working.

GAUGE 
The measurements of the blanket are about: 120x180cm/47x70”


METHOD
Cast on 18 stitches with the first colour and proceed as follows:
1. Colour 1 –Knit long loop
2. Colour 1 – Purl dropping the twisted thread
3. Colour 1 – Knit long loop
4. Colour 1 – Purl dropping the twisted thread
5. Colour 2 – Knit long loop
6. Colour 2 – Purl dropping the twisted thread
7. Colour 2 - Knit long loop
8. Colour 2 - Purl dropping the twisted thread
9. Colour 3 – Knit long loop
10. Colour 3 - Purl dropping the twisted thread
11. Colour 3 – Knit long loop
12. Colour 3 – Purl dropping the twisted thread
13. Colour 1 – Knit long loop
14. Colour 1 – Purl dropping the twisted thread
15. Colour 1 – Knit long loop
16. Colour 2 – Purl dropping the twisted thread
17. Colour 2 – Knit long loop
18. Colour 2 – Purl dropping the twisted thread
19. Colour 3 – Knit long loop
20. Colour 3 - Purl dropping the twisted thread
21. Colour 3 - Knit long loop
22. Colour 2 – Purl dropping the twisted thread
23. Colour 2 – Knit long loop
24. Colour 2 – Purl dropping the twisted thread
25. Colour 1 – Knit long loop
26. Colour 1 – Purl dropping the twisted thread

28. Colour 3 – Purl dropping the twisted thread
29. Colour 3 – Knit long loop
30. Colour 3 – Purl dropping the twisted thread
31. Colour 3 – Knit long loop
32. Colour 2 – Purl dropping the twisted thread
33. Colour 2 - Knit long loop
34. Colour 2 – Purl dropping the twisted thread
35. Colour 2 – Knit long loop
36. Colour 1 – Purl dropping the twisted thread
37. Colour 1- Knit long loop
38. Colour 1 – Purl dropping the twisted thread
39. Colour 1 – Knit long loop
40. Colour 1 – Purl – Close stitches

Bind off hiding the ribbons of the colour change inserting them into the stitches.
