Claire Moynihan: some very special entomological collections

Claire Moynihan: bugs and snails embroidered in felt

Claire Moynihan is an English fiber artist that I discovered a few days ago. My "textile heart" was immediately struck by Cupid's arrow! Claire has a degree in Applied Arts and is currently working on 3D embroidery.

She is an embroidery freestyler because, while using traditional techniques, she employs unusual materials and themes. Her work may remind one of Stumpwork, in which the stitched figures are raised from the surface of the work to obtain a 3-D effect. Claire rests her bugs and snails on felt. Small, perfect felt spheres ranging from brown to grey to white, in many different hues. This way, her delicate creatures find a safe, somewhat undisturbed haven, as required by the nature of her art, working on which she spends very peaceful days.  It's an activity which requires a lot of patience, as well as a deep knowledge of the portrayed animals - and you can definitely tell when you look at these small creatures.

Claire Moynihan: entomological collections

Butterflies, bees, wasps, dragonflies, caterpillars, ladybugs, beetles and snails are the little animals that Claire Moynihan captures in her inspired display cases, creating superb entomological collections. That is one of the reasons why I was fascinated by her work. In addition to her obivious skill in making fiber art, and to the pleasant eccentricity of the idea, I love the fact that one can learn about the shape of the bugs by looking at these collections - especially children. One can calmly analyze bugs which fly or walk quickly, or which cannot be seen in the city. Bugs and snails which are made of thread, sure, but life-size and rich in detail, gathered in entomological collections which hold a didactic value.
