METHOD

The crop cardigan is worked flat and consists of three pieces: the back and the two front panels.

How to knit the back of the crop cardigan

With knitting needle n° 10 EU / 15 US, cast on 29 (31, 33) stitches.

Row 1: Slip 1 stitch knitwise (selvage stitch), repeat (purl 1, knit 1) until the last 2 stitches, purl the next stitch, then work 1 selvage stitch
row 2: Slip 1 stitch knitwise (selvage stitch), repeat (knit 1, purl 1) until the last 2 stitches, knit the next stitch, then work 1 selvage stitch
rows 3 and 4: Repeat Rows 1 and 2.

You have now completed the bottom 1x1 ribbed border, measuring 5.5 cm / 2.2". The next two rows are given separately for each size.

SIZE S
Row 5: 1 selvage stitch, knit 13 stitches, decrease 1 stitch by knitting 2 stitches together, continue knitting until the last stitch, 1 selvage stitch
row 6: 1 selvage stitch, purl across until the last stitch, 1 selvage stitch.

SIZE M
Row 5: 1 selvage stitch, knit across until the last stitch, 1 selvage stitch
row 6: 1 selvage stitch, purl across until the last stitch, 1 selvage stitch.

SIZE L
Row 5: 1 selvage stitch, knit 30 stitches, make 1 knit stitch increase, continue knitting until the last stitch, 1 selvage stitch
row 6: 1 selvage stitch, purl across until the last stitch, 1 selvage stitch.

You now have 28 (31, 34) stitches on your needle.

Row 7: 1 selvage stitch, knit across until the last stitch, 1 selvage stitch
row 8: 1 selvage stitch, purl across until the last stitch, 1 selvage stitch.

Rows 7 and 8 establish the stockinette stitch pattern with selvage stitches at the beginning and end of each row. Repeat them 8 (9, 10) more times, reaching row 24 (26, 28) and a length of 34 (37, 40) cm / 13.4" (14.6", 15.7").

Row 25 (27, 29): Work 1 selvage stitch and knit 8 (9, 10) stitches, then place them on a stitch holder. Bind off the next 10 (11, 12) stitches for the neckline, knit 8 (9, 10) stitches, and work 1 selvage stitch
row 26 (28, 30): Work 1 selvage stitch and purl 8 (9, 10) stitches. Place these stitches on a stitch holder.

Rejoin the stitches from the first side, work 1 selvage stitch and purl 8 (9, 10) stitches, then place these stitches on a stitch holder as well.

How to knit the right front panel

With knitting needle n° 10 EU / 15 US, cast on 13 (15, 17) stitches.

Row 5: 1 selvage stitch, knit across until the last stitch, 1 selvage stitch
row 6: 1 selvage stitch, purl across until the last stitch, 1 selvage stitch
rows 7 and 8: Repeat Rows 5 and 6
row 9: Work 1 selvage stitch, decrease 1 stitch for the neckline by working a simple left-leaning decrease (slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over), continue knitting until the last stitch, 1 selvage stitch
row 10: 1 selvage stitch, purl across until the last stitch, 1 selvage stitch
row 11: 1 selvage stitch, knit across until the last stitch, 1 selvage stitch
row 12: 1 selvage stitch, purl across until the last stitch, 1 selvage stitch.

Rows 9 to 12 establish the stockinette stitch pattern with a right-side neckline decrease. Repeat these rows 3 (4, 4) more times. Then, for sizes S (-, L), repeat Rows 11 and 12 (-, Rows 9 and 10) one more time.

At Row 26 (28, 30), your work measures 37 (40, 43) cm / 14.6" (15.7", 17"), with 9 (10, 11) stitches remaining. Place the stitches on a stitch holder.

How to knit the left front panel

Knit the left front panel the same way as the right front panel, but mirror the shaping.

How to finish the crop cardigan

Join the shoulders using the mattress stitch.

Sew the side seams along the selvage stitches for 18 (20, 22) cm / 7.1" (8", 8.7") from the bottom up, leaving the upper 19 (20, 21) cm / 7.5" (8", 8.3") open for the armholes.
