METHOD

The hat is worked in the round, from top to bottom, and is seamless. Replace the first stitch of each round with groups of double crochet with 3 chains, and replace each round of single crochet with 1 chain. Close the rounds with 1 slip stitch, worked into the 3rd chain from the beginning for rounds with groups of double crochet, and into the starting chain for rounds of single crochet.

Starting with the crown of the hat:
round 1: Chain 5 and join into a circle with 1 slip stitch.

Work (3 double crochet, 1 chain) for 4 times around the starting chains; you will have 4 groups of 3 double crochet separated by 1 chain.

Round 2: using slip stitches, reach the central stitch of the first group of 3 double crochet, then work (3 double crochet in the central stitch of the group, 3 chains, 3 double crochet in the next chain, 3 chains) for 4 times; you will have 8 groups of 3 double crochet separated by arches of 3 chains
round 3: using slip stitches, reach the first arch of 3 chains, then work (3 double crochet, 3 chains, 3 double crochet, 3 chains) in the first and each following arch of 3 chains; you will have 16 groups of 3 double crochet separated by arches of 3 chains
round 4: using slip stitches, reach the first arch of 3 chains, then work 3 double crochet in the same arch followed by 3 chains, then repeat (3 double crochet in the next arch of 3 chains, 3 chains) to the end of the round
rounds 5 to 10: work as in round 4
round 11: work in single crochet, making 3 single crochet on each group of 3 double crochet and 2 single crochet in each arch of 3 chains; you will have 80 single crochet stitches
round 12: repeat (1 double crochet in the next 3 stitches, skip the next stitch, 3 chains) to the end of the round; you will have 20 groups of 3 double crochet separated by arches of 3 chains
round 13: using slip stitches, reach the first arch of 3 chains, then work 3 double crochet in the same arch followed by 3 chains. Repeat (3 double crochet in the next arch of 3 chains, 3 chains) for 3 times, work (3 double crochet, 3 chains, 3 double crochet) in the next arch, then work 3 chains. Repeat (3 double crochet in the next arch of 3 chains, 3 chains) for 4 times, work (3 double crochet, 3 chains, 3 double crochet) in the next arch, then work 3 chains. Repeat from * to * once more, then repeat (3 double crochet in the next arch of 3 chains, 3 chains) for 5 times; you will have 23 groups of 3 double crochet separated by arches of 3 chains
round 14: using slip stitches, reach the first arch of 3 chains, then work 3 double crochet in the same arch followed by 3 chains, then repeat (3 double crochet in the next arch of 3 chains, 3 chains) for 3 times, work 3 double crochet in the central stitch of the next group of 3 double crochet, 3 chains, 3 double crochet in the next arch of 3 chains, 3 chains. Repeat (3 double crochet in the next arch of 3 chains, 3 chains) for 4 times, work 3 double crochet in the central stitch of the next group of 3 double crochet, 3 chains, 3 double crochet in the next arch of 3 chains, 3 chains. Repeat from * to * for 2 more times, then repeat (3 double crochet in the next arch of 3 chains, 3 chains) for 3 times; you will have 27 groups of 3 double crochet separated by arches of 3 chains
round 15: work in single crochet, making 3 single crochet on each group of 3 double crochet and 2 single crochet in each arch of 3 chains; you will have 135 single crochet stitches
