How to make a mohair and cotton heart-warmer crochet

A project for those already familiar with crochet, first work the front and back, then sew them together and finally add the sleeves. The belt to tighten the heart-warmer is made with a spool knitter (or tricotin). A lacy stitch adds a romantic touch to this soft and light heart-warmer, made with the Vivienne fantasy yarn.

METHOD

The crossover top consists of five pieces: the back and front panels worked flat, and the sleeves worked in the round around the armholes. All edges are finished afterward. The instructions below are provided for size M only, with a summarized explanation for sizes S and L to adjust the starting chains, total rows, and decreases for the neckline and shoulders.

How to crochet the back of the crossover top

With a crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US, chain 69.

Row 1: chain 5 (counts as 1 single crochet and 4 chains), skip the next 3 chains, 1 single crochet in the next chain, repeat (4 chains, skip the next 3 chains, 1 single crochet in the next chain) until the end of the row, turn
row 2: chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet), repeat (4 double crochets in the next chain space, chain 3, 1 double crochet in the next chain space, chain 3) until the last chain space, 4 double crochets in the last chain space, 1 double crochet in the last stitch, turn
row 3: chain 1 (counts as 1 single crochet), repeat (4 chains over the underlying double crochets, 1 single crochet in the next chain space, 4 chains, 1 single crochet in the next chain space) until the last set of double crochets, 4 chains over the last double crochets, 1 single crochet in the last stitch, turn
row 4: chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet), repeat (chain 3, 1 double crochet in the next chain space, chain 3, 4 double crochets in the next chain space) until the last chain space, chain 3, 1 double crochet in the last chain space, chain 3, 1 double crochet in the last stitch, turn
row 5: chain 5 (counts as 1 single crochet and 4 chains), skip the first chain space, 1 single crochet in the next chain space, repeat (4 chains over the underlying double crochets, 1 single crochet in the next chain space, 4 chains, 1 single crochet in the next chain space) until the last set of double crochets, 4 chains over the underlying double crochets, 1 single crochet in the next chain space, 4 chains, 1 single crochet in the last stitch, turn
row 6: chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet), repeat (4 double crochets in the next chain space, chain 3, 1 double crochet in the next chain space, chain 3) until the last chain space, 4 double crochets in the last chain space, 1 double crochet in the last stitch, turn.

Rows 3–6 establish the lace pattern; repeat them 7 more times to reach row 34, measuring 49 cm (19.3").

Shaping the neckline and shoulders
Row 35
: chain 1 (counts as 1 single crochet), repeat (4 chains over the underlying double crochets, 1 single crochet in the next chain space, 4 chains, 1 single crochet in the next chain space) twice, 4 chains over the underlying double crochets, skip the next chain space, 1 single crochet in the next double crochet, turn without working the remaining stitches. Continue working only on this side for the neckline and shoulder
row 36: slip stitch to reach the second single crochet, chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet) in the same single crochet, repeat (4 double crochets in the next chain space, chain 3, 1 double crochet in the next chain space, chain 3) twice, 1 double crochet in the last stitch, turn
row 37: slip stitch to reach the second chain space, chain 1 (counts as 1 single crochet) in the same chain space, 4 chains over the underlying double crochets, 1 single crochet in the next chain space, 4 chains, 1 single crochet in the next chain space, 4 chains over the underlying double crochets, 1 single crochet in the last stitch, turn
row 38: chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet), chain 3, 1 double crochet in the next chain space, chain 3, 4 double crochets in the next chain space, chain 3, 1 double crochet in the next chain space, chain 3, 1 double crochet in the last stitch. Fasten off.

Skip the 3 central motifs for the neckline, then count the same number of motifs as for the first side (each motif consists of chain 3, 4 double crochets, chain 3, 1 double crochet) and reattach the yarn in the last double crochet of the last skipped motif using a crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US. Work the second side in the same way as the first, but mirrored. Fasten off.

Adjustments for sizes S and L
Size S: chain 61 and work in the lace pattern as for size M. There will be 15 chain spaces in Row 1. Work a total of 32 rows, then in the next row, skip the 5 central motifs for the neckline. Work 4 more rows on the remaining motifs for each side, decreasing 1 motif for the neckline in Row 34 and 1 motif for the shoulder in Row 35, following the same instructions as for size M.

Size L: chain 77 and work in the lace pattern as for size M. There will be 19 chain spaces in Row 1. Work a total of 36 rows, then in the next row, skip the 7 central motifs for the neckline. Work 4 more rows on the remaining motifs for each side, decreasing 1 motif for the neckline in Row 38 and 1 motif for the shoulder in Row 39, following the same instructions as for size M.

How to make the right front of the crochet wrap top

With a crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US, chain 69 and work in the lace stitch pattern as explained for the back until row 11.

Row 12: chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet), repeat (chain 3, 1 double crochet in the next chain space, chain 3, 4 double crochets in the next chain space) until the last chain space, 1 double crochet in the single crochet before the last chain space, turn without working the remaining stitches
row 13: chain 1 (counts as 1 single crochet), repeat (chain 4 over the double crochets below, 1 single crochet in the next chain space, chain 4, 1 single crochet in the next chain space) until the last 2 chain spaces, chain 4 over the double crochets below, 1 single crochet in the next chain space, chain 4, 1 single crochet in the last stitch, turn
row 14: chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet), repeat (4 double crochets in the next chain space, chain 3, 1 double crochet in the next chain space, chain 3) until the last 2 chain spaces, 4 double crochets in the next chain space, 1 double crochet in the single crochet before the last chain space, turn without working the remaining stitches
row 15: chain 1 (counts as 1 single crochet), repeat (chain 4 over the double crochets below, 1 single crochet in the next chain space, chain 4, 1 single crochet in the next chain space) until the last group of double crochets, chain 4 over the last double crochets below, 1 single crochet in the last stitch, turn.

Rows 12 to 15 establish the lace stitch pattern with a decrease on the right side for the neckline. Repeat these rows 5 more times, reaching row 35.

Row 36: chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet), repeat (chain 3, 1 double crochet in the next chain space, chain 3, 4 double crochets in the next chain space) twice, 1 double crochet in the single crochet before the last chain space, turn without working the remaining stitches
row 37: chain 1 (counts as 1 single crochet), chain 4 over the double crochets below, 1 single crochet in the next chain space, chain 4, 1 single crochet in the next chain space, chain 4 over the double crochets below, 1 single crochet in the next chain space, chain 4, 1 single crochet into the next chain space, chain 4 over the underlying double crochets, 1 single crochet into the next chain space, chain 4, 1 single crochet into the last stitch, turn
row 38: slip stitch to reach the second single crochet, chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet) in the same single crochet, chain 3, 1 double crochet into the next chain space, chain 3, 4 double crochets into the next chain space, chain 3, 1 double crochet into the last chain space, chain 3, 1 double crochet into the last stitch. Fasten off.

How to adjust for sizes S and L
Size S: chain 61 and work in lace stitch pattern as for the back until row 9. Then, in row 10, begin decreasing 1 motif on the right side for the neckline as explained for size M. Repeat this decrease on every even-numbered row. At the same height as for the back, decrease 1 motif on the left side for the shoulder. Fasten off.

Size L: chain 77 and work in lace stitch pattern as for the back until row 13. Then, in row 14, begin decreasing 1 motif on the right side for the neckline as explained for size M. Repeat this decrease on every even-numbered row. At the same height as for the back, decrease 1 motif on the left side for the shoulder. Fasten off.

How to make the left front of the crochet wrap top

Work the left front in the same way as the right front, but in a mirrored manner.

How to make the sleeves of the crochet wrap top

The sleeves are worked in the round, starting the first round around the armhole after sewing the shoulders and sides. Before sewing, you need to add width to the armhole and, consequently, to the sleeve by creating a base along the edges of the front panels.

On the right front, using a crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US, work 3 rows of double crochet along the side seam, starting from the bottom and working up for 25 cm / 9.8”. Repeat the same process on the left front. Sew the shoulders and close the sides.

Start with the right sleeve.

With a crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US crochet hook, join the yarn at the center under the armhole.

Round 1: work 22 chain-4 arches evenly around the armhole, each separated by 1 single crochet. Close this and all subsequent rounds with a slip stitch in the first stitch. This round corresponds to row 1 of the lace stitch pattern, follow the same instructions
round 2: work as in row 2 of the lace stitch pattern, decreasing 1 motif at the beginning of the round
round 3: work as in row 3 of the lace stitch pattern
round 4: work as in row 4 of the lace stitch pattern, decreasing 1 motif at the end of the round
round 5: work as in row 1 of the lace stitch pattern
round 6: work as in row 2 of the lace stitch pattern, decreasing 1 motif at the beginning of the round
round 7: work as in row 3 of the lace stitch pattern
round 8: work as in row 4 of the lace stitch pattern, decreasing 1 motif at the end of the round
rounds 9 to 12: repeat rounds 5 to 8. Fasten off.

Work the left sleeve following the same instructions as the right sleeve.

How to adjust for sizes S and L
Size S: on the right front, using a crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US, work 3 rows of double crochet along the side seam, starting from the bottom and working up for 24 cm / 9.4”. Repeat on the left front. Sew the shoulders and close the sides. Work the sleeves exactly as for size M, but in round 1, make 20 chain arches separated by 1 single crochet.

Size L: On the right front, using a crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US, work 3 rows of double crochet along the side seam, starting from the bottom and working up for 26 cm / 10.2”. Repeat on the left front. Sew the shoulders and close the sides. Work the sleeves as for size M, but in round 1, make 24 chain arches separated by 1 single crochet and work a total of 14 rounds.

How to assemble and finish the crochet wrap top

Bottom edge: with a crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US, work 3 rows of single crochet along the entire bottom edge, starting at the right front tip and ending at the left front tip.

Front opening and neckline: with a crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US, work 2 rows of single crochet along the front edges and neckline, starting at the bottom edge of the right front and ending at the bottom edge of the left front.

Sleeve edges: with a crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US, work 1 row of single crochet around each sleeve opening.

Make two tubular cords to tie the wrap top.

For each cord, follow these steps: chain 5 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring. Chain 1 and work 1 single crochet into the base chain. Continue working in spiral single crochet, first into the base chain and then into the previously worked single crochets. When the cord measures approximately 100 cm / 39.4”, close the round with a slip stitch, fasten off, and secure the yarn. Sew the cords on the wrong side, at the beginning of the neckline on each front panel.
