Needle felting is an artisan technique with which both two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects can be created. All that is needed is some wool, needles, a basic knowledge of felting, and the desire to learn first and then create, of course!
Today we’d like to introduce you to Marzena from Studio Motane, a needle felt artist who has created one of her iconic families of 'plush animals' for us. With the cutest features and expressions so sweet that you can't take your eyes off them. Made with our exclusive carded wool blend, they are perfect as a children’s toy but also as a key ring, or as delightful ornaments or trinkets.
Marzena lives in a small town in Poland. Her house is full of life, fun, children, cats, dogs and, the ubiquitous, wool.
She undertook some years of artistic studies which did not lead to any degree but which, in any case, left an important mark on Marzena. In fact, she has lived and breathed drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, and graphics for a long time.
For some years I did children's photography and would sew props for both myself and other photographers. At that time my husband brought me some books on crafts from a trip to Japan. Among these books was one on needle felting. I was pleasantly surprised by the infinite creative possibilities offered by such a simple material such as wool and how few were the essential tools to begin. It is from here that my self-taught journey with needle felting began. In the beginning there were punctured fingers and many broken needles but then I got the hang of it and gifted the first of my creations to my friends. Then it truly took off and became a job: photo sessions with my objects. Cakes, blankets, funny hats with animal ears.
Studio Motane and its 'plush animals' were born from the observation of children's development. Marzena loves their spontaneity and their creativity and imagination, however, above all she loves the world they create while playing, a world without superstructures. She began creating the first of her soft toys, being very basic, for her daughters. She liked the idea that they played and surrounded themselves with beautiful objects made of natural materials.
Marzena recently involved one of her daughters in this activity and it was in this way that some different projects were born, such as pizza or a huge ketchup!
Marzena is delighted that her creations are appreciated by her children but also by many other people who don't know her, so much so that she has made it a full-time job.
The arrival of her fifth child, the first boy, has left her more time to reflect on what to do in the years ahead, but also less time to dedicate to needle felting. A job so meticulous that it requires a lot of dedication. In any case, expect many enjoyable creations in the future and perhaps even workshops held in her studio.
