The PookaToys punch needle

from Annalisa Chelli - 14/03/2024

Annalisa Chelli

My name is Emilia Rogińska and I like to define myself as a nomadic artist. I come from Poland and live half the time in Italy and the other half in my van. Now, I would like to tell you about my passion for punch needle and my collaboration with DHG.

PookaToys and her passion for punch needle

Creating was always a big part of me, I grew up with a mother constantly crocheting something and a grandmother, who created patchworks from second hand materials all her life. I remember the soothing sound of sewing machine late in the night, that was putting me to sleep, each time we were visiting her cottage in a small forgotten polish village.

I was struggling all my life to find a 'normal' job, have a 'normal' career and lead a 'normal' life, but I figured out it's just not for me. I live to create and I create to live. I'm full of ideas, my craft interests are like a never ending flow. I also love to move around, it's very inspiring – I have a side project, where I visit and photograph local craftsmen during my travels.

I started as a small brand @pookatoys for children, but soon I realized, that my creations like also the grown ups. I love children imagination, one of my biggest inspirations is children illustration. I like my designs to remain simple and mysterious, as I belive children need more space for imagination these days, more space for dreaming, more poetry. I would say that my style is minimal and fun, I like finding unexpected colours combinations. My motto is 'the hardest thing is simplyfying'. I believe, that power hides in simplicity.

POOKA itself means an animal spirit, which takes care of the owner. I'm a big animalista, I am also a bit of a modern strega to be honest. I believe in good energy power, the magic clinical power of plants, nature inspires me a lot, my big hobby is looking for interesting shadows!

I do embroider, I sew, but my biggest passion became punchneedle technique. It's very simple and easy to pack ;) I love the meditative aspect of it, to create something you have to punch the needle rythmicly many times, I find it very relaxing.

I am very grateful to be able to create from DHG materials. I fell totally in love with Piuma yarn. The colour palette is beautiful. The wool is extremely soft, I love the quality. The size is perfect to be used with a classic Oxford punchneedle needle, which makes it a perfect yarn to use for this technique, as it's not so easy to find a perfect one! I totally reccomend Piuma for punchneedle, I became a big fan myself and I think it's gonna me my number one from now on!

My plans for future? More punching of course! In my work I use only natural materials like wool and linen. I also love to give second ife to forgotten materials. As I eat local, I also try to create local! Living in Abruzzo I discovered, that the second hands are full of amazing, colourful bed covers, traditionally from here, la Taranta. I guess that the trends have changed, and people don't want them anymore in their houses. So I started to collect them and my plan is to create a collection of jackets, the colours are amazing and it's 100% wool, can you imagine?
