Vanessa Barragão - DHG Art Film Surrounded by nature, a journey through sustainability

Having a vision of your future is essential. Finding one and working to achieve it is a challenge that is not always easy but necessary. Our vision, on the topic of sustainability and individual growth, coincides perfectly with that of the Portuguese textile artist Vanessa Barragão.

It is for this reason that Vanessa, after a few years, came back to visit us for a residency that lasted a couple of weeks. This time, however, in our new factory, constructed in the heart of the Val di Bisenzio, nestled between the river and the mountains.

The site-specific piece aims to merge in a single ideal place her art, her commitment to a more sustainable model of life, and a more conscious development both as people and as inhabitants respectful of the planet we call home.

It was September and the piece created was named Gaia. A name that, in Greek mythology, represents Mother Earth, therefore, strength, fertility, and life. This name was perfect to describe the intentions of Vanessa and DHG because both of us are trying hard to achieve a balance between our needs and the environment. How?

Vanessa does this every day, choosing scrap textile materials to create her now iconic textile works which bring coral reefs magically to the surface, their colourful inhabitants, and their fragility which we must consider. Yarns which she collects in Portuguese factories. Beautiful products that just need someone to discover them and to create something magnificent.

We, on the other hand, work hard every day, especially in our industrial dye house, to offer our customers a production system that aims to reduce environmental impact. For example, obtaining and offering certifications such as Oeko-Tex, GOTS and GRS, monitoring wastewater and returning water to the river cleaner than it was when we took it, forging relationships with suppliers who share our values, using renewable energy sources such as solar and hydroelectric, managing waste responsibly.

During the residency, we shot the fourth DHG Art Film, our second with Vanessa. And we are extremely proud of it because over the years Vanessa has become a good friend of DHG and it was wonderful to do something so important together again.

We would like to point out that for the Gaia piece, the materials used were exclusively those of DHG.

And now all that is left to do is watch the film. Happy viewing!
