Today we would like to introduce you to the artist Gudrun Bartenberger – Geyer, a woman who knew how to turn her talent into a career. Her latest piece “The Caged Body” will be on show at the Fiberart International 2016 exhibition.
After three years, the exhibition has returned to the limelight in Pittsburgh and will be open from May 6th to August 21st, 2106. There to judge the works is a committee made up by Chungie Lee, Arturo Alonzo Sandoval and Tali Weinberg.
Now let's move on to telling you about the artist in question, Gudrun Bartenberger – Geyer. After getting her master's degree in Fashion, she made an important decision, that is, to open her own sartorial boutique in the Austrian capital of Vienna. During this same period, she also gained notoriety by winning not one, but two Haute Couture awards, while also deciding to create a collection of bags and boxes for florists made with discarded and recycled fabric.
However, as time passed, she was taken by the idea of how felt and fabric can be shaped simultaneously to give life to a dress. This last piece is not considered a mere everyday garment, but yet is received as a sculpture or work of art that carries meaning within it. Felt has become truly interesting and important in her works, thanks to the possibilities that it provides: the various combinations one can create with it, the types of techniques and molding that can be used and finally its originality.
Each felt garment-piece that Gudrun designs can be traced back to a story, therefore giving each one a sense of expression and individuality. In addition, the artist distinguishes herself also in her talent to meld recycled materials with old fabric, therefore transforming them into new objects.
Let's get back to the piece that will be on show at Fiberart International 2016. The name chosen for the piece is “The Caged Body” that represents both social pressure as well as the pressure created from the desire to succeed, including all of the existential crises and all of the fears that prevent people from handling the difficult burdens of life. We can see the results of this in the modern ailments such as back pain, depression and nervous breakdowns. Man is so imprisoned by these physical and mental problems that instead of resolving the problems at the root, we only treat them superficially.
