How to make a crochet tank top

The triangular lace pattern characterizes this crochet tank top. The fit is oversized, allowing for layering with a nice men's shirt underneath, as we’ve done here, to give the outfit a very refined "old money" feel. The front and back are made separately and then sewn together, and finally, the border is worked in slip stitch. This project is suitable for those who already know how to crochet and are familiar with the double crochet and chain stitch.

For this project, more than ever, the key difference lies in the chosen yarn: Ghost. A technical yarn made of a ribbon around which a very fine mesh is constructed, so uniform that it is almost imperceptible. The result is a smooth, flat, and luminous ribbon that glides easily through your fingers, making it super easy to crochet because it’s slippery. Ghost is also perfect for hand weaving and creating accessories.

METHOD

The tank top is worked flat and consists of two pieces, the front and the back. The edges are worked after the seams are sewn together.

With crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US, chain 81 (93) stitches.

Row 1: 6 chains (equivalent to 1 single crochet and 5 chains), skip 3 chains, 1 single crochet in the next chain, repeat (5 chains, skip 3 chains, 1 single crochet in the next chain) to the end of the row, turn
row 2: 3 chains (equivalent to 1 double crochet), 4 double crochets in the 3rd of the next 5 chains, 1 chain over the single crochet below, repeat (4 double crochets in the 3rd of the next 5 chains, 1 chain over the single crochet below) until the second-to-last group of 5 chains, 4 double crochets in the 3rd of the last 5 chains, 1 double crochet in the first stitch of the previous row, turn
row 3: 6 chains (equivalent to 1 single crochet and 5 chains), 1 single crochet in the next chain, repeat (5 chains over the 4 double crochets below, 1 single crochet in the next chain) to the end of the row, making the last single crochet not in the chain but in the first stitch of the previous row, turn
row 4: work as Row 2.

Rows 3 and 4 establish the block pattern. Repeat them for 7 more times, until you reach Row 18, which is 19 cm / 7.5" high.

Row 19: work 1 slip stitch in the first 5 double crochets, in the next chain, and in the next 4 double crochets. Work 1 single crochet in the next chain (= 2 motifs decreased for the armhole). Repeat (5 chains over the 4 double crochets below, 1 single crochet in the next chain) until the second-to-last chain. Turn, skipping the last 2 motifs (= 2 motifs decreased for the armhole)

How to make the finishing touches of the tank top

Close the shoulders and sides with an invisible mattress stitch. For the neckline, using crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US, work 1 round of double crochet and 1 round of single crochet around the front and back necklines. For the armhole edges, using crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US, work 2 rounds of double crochet and 1 round of single crochet around each armhole.
