Today we're going to learn how to knit a Japanese-style tank top. The characteristics of the contemporary Japanese style are neutral colours, minimal and not-too-bold shapes, and natural materials such as cotton. Our tank top definitely respects the aforementioned parameters.
A key feature of this top is that you can wear it with jeans and a skirt. It is very feminine and sexy without being vulgar. It has side straps as a closure that allow you to obtain an alluring see-through effect.
The yarn chosen for this project is our Kyoto. Highly elegant with a light pattern that is especially appreciated up close. Its core is made of recycled cotton.
Let's begin.
MATERIALS
Kyoto yarn col. Bamboo 200 g / 5.3 oz
Knitting needles n° 5 EU / 8 US
GAUGE
10 cm x 10 cm / 4" x 4"
20 stitches x 22 rows
STITCHES USED
i-Cord stitch:
cast on 3 stitches.
Slip these 3 stitches to the other side of the double-pointed needles so that the thread that goes to the ball of yarn is at the end of the stitches to be worked on the new round.
Knit 3 stitches slightly tightening the first one.
Repeat these last 2 steps, each time sliding the piece to the other end and knitting to the desired length.
Garter stitch:
row 1: knit all stitches.
Repeat this row both on the right side and on the wrong side
SIZE
M
For sizes S and L, consider a 2 cm variation in width and length in the underarm and neckline.
LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY
Intermediate

For the back cast on 58 stitches in garter stitch and work for 58 ridges, i.e. 1 ridge corresponds to 2 rows. Knit without working the opening for the armhole or neck.
Also, for the front cast on 58 stitches in garter stitch but work 48 ridges.
Now proceed with the openings for the front, work 20 stitches in garter stitch for the shoulder. During the processing, make 4 decreases (4 total ridges), in other words, knit 2 stitches together 4 times.
Close the shoulder stitches.
Close the 18 central stitches.
Now work in the same way for the other shoulder.

With double pointed needles n° 5 EU / 8 US make 4 straps, i.e. the side straps of the tank top.
Cast on 4 stitches and knit using the i-Cord technique for approx. 60 cm / 23.6".
Sew the side straps 30 cm / 11.8" from the shoulder.

If you enjoyed knitting the Japanese-style tank top, you may also make a knit under-jacket.
