So here we are with our first tutorial for Back to Ithaca, the new DHG mood.
I have chosen a simple yet eye-catching project for which I used the DHG Silk Chiffon Ribbons. We hope that it can inspire the more experienced of our readers. Giving them a starting point for their projects, while at the same time persuade beginners to have a go at it.
I am absolutely convinced that creativity is inside each and every person. Sometimes you only need to break the ice and stop thinking that you don’t have the skills to do something.
Let’s start!
First of all, choose a ribbon out of the many available on our website. The one I chose, and that I also recommend for you, is the 2.5 cm one which gives the final piece optimal volume. As for the color, just pick the one you like best, or the one which goes best with your complexion.
Cut it to measure. There is no absolute rule to determine the right length. I usually measure the distance between the neck and the chest and then double it. I love soft, lavish necklaces!
Now fold the ribbon in two and insert it into a bead tip using a crochet needle. Run it through to the desired length and tie the two ends of the necklace. Then hide the knot under the bead tip.
Bead tips can be hard to find, so if you cannot purchase one please keep in mind that you can replace them with small metal parts. Or even any decorative items (even just a bead) as long as they are the right shape and size to hide the knot holding the necklace together.
Once the body of the necklace is ready, go ahead and make the decorative tassel. Cut strips of silk chiffon ribbon about 20cm long. 5 or 6 are enough, but you can make more or fewer, depending on how much volume you want to create.
Place the strips one on top of the other, and tie them at the center using the two ends of the necklace.
Finally, hide the knot under the bead tip like you did for the first knot that we tied to create the body of the necklace. Let the silk chiffon ribbons hang vertically to create a tassel. Again, this will be easier to do if you use a crochet needle.
If necessary, you can adjust the length of the silk ribbons by cutting them with a pair of fabric scissors.
The necklace is now finished, but if you want you can add some extra decorations. For this type of projects, I often use small metal pieces and decorations from old jewelry that I don’t wear anymore or that is simply broken. So, this is also an easy way to recycle materials. To add any extra decorations, use a crochet needle.
And here is the finished piece. Isn’t it lovely?
