How to knit a men’s salt-and-pepper sweater

There won’t be a man – or a woman, because this piece is without a doubt unisex – who can resist the salt-and-pepper sweater we’re sharing today. You can wear it on its own or under a coat. With a pair of jeans, but also, for example, with corduroy trousers. It works with everything because it’s a true classic. What makes it stand out from the rest is the yarn combination used to make it: Lagom, with 70% recycled wool, and Vivienne in a 2-ply structure – one fine printed cotton strand and one mohair strand. These two yarns together are the secret behind the beauty of this salt-and-pepper-effect sweater.

Have fun choosing the color combo you like best. There are so many options in our shop you’ll be spoiled for choice!

And here’s our recommendation: don’t try to recreate this sweater with other yarns – if you want the same effect, you need to go with Lagom and Vivienne.

Happy knitting.

STITCHES USED
Knit
Purl
Twisted knit stitch:
work the stitch in knit through the back loop of the stitch below.
Chain cast-on:
with a crochet hook, make as many chain stitches as the number of cast-on stitches indicated, then turn the foundation chain so you can work into the bumps on the opposite side; still using the crochet hook or the needles, pull up 1 stitch from each bump (if you are working with the crochet hook, after every few stitches transfer them to the knitting needle; if you are working with the needles, simply leave the stitches on the needle); turn and work 1 wrong-side row in purl.
1x1 rib:
work alternating 1 stitch in knit and 1 stitch in purl on both right side and wrong side of the work.
Stockinette stitch:
row 1: knit
row 2: purl.
Repeat rows 1 and 2.
Right-leaning lifted increase:
lift the strand between the stitch just worked and the next stitch and knit 1 stitch through the back loop.
Slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over:
slip 1 stitch to the right needle without working it, knit the next stitch from the left needle and, with the tip of the left needle, pass the slipped stitch over the knit stitch, that is the stitch you did not work.

PROCEDURE

The sweater is worked holding the yarn double throughout, with 1 strand of Lagom and 1 strand of Vivienne held together. It is worked flat in 4 pieces: back, front and sleeves. The neckband is worked afterwards, after seaming one shoulder.

How to knit the back of the men’s sweater

With crochet hook n° 3.5 EU / D-3 US and the yarn held double (1 strand of Lagom and 1 strand of Vivienne held together) cast on 65 (73, 79) stitches using the chain cast-on technique. Continue with knitting needles n° 4 EU / 6 US.

Row 1: knit the first stitch, repeat (1 stitch in purl, 1 stitch in knit) to the end of the row
row 2: purl the first stitch, repeat (1 stitch in knit, 1 stitch in purl) to the end of the row.

Rows 1 and 2 set 1x1 rib for the lower band, repeat them 4 more times: you will have reached row 10, equal to 5 cm / 2".

Row 11: knit the first 5 (5, 8) stitches, repeat [work 1 knit increase and 7 (8, 8) stitches in knit] to the last 4 (4, 7) stitches, work 1 knit increase and 4 (4, 7) stitches in knit
row 12: purl. You have increased 9 stitches and you now have 74 (82, 88) stitches on the needle. Continue in stockinette stitch for 112 (116, 120) rows: you will have reached row 124 (128, 132), equal to 62 (64, 66) cm / 24.4" (25.2", 26").

Fasten off.

How to knit the front

With crochet hook n° 3.5 EU / D-3 US and the yarn held double (1 strand of Lagom and 1 strand of Vivienne held together) cast on 65 (73, 79) stitches using the chain cast-on technique. Continue with knitting needles n° 4 EU / 6 US and work as for the back up to row 110 (114, 114): you will have 74 (82, 88) stitches on the needle.

Row 111 (115, 115): knit the first 28 (32, 34) stitches, bind off the next 18 (18, 16) stitches for the neck, knit the last 28 (32, 36) stitches.
row 112 (116, 116): purl the 28 (32, 36) stitches of the second side. From here on, continue only on this second side, leaving the stitches of the first side on a stitch holder
row 113 (117, 117): knit the first stitch, decrease 1 stitch for the neck by working 1 slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over over the next 2 stitches, continue in knit to the end of the row
row 114 (118, 118): purl
rows 115 to 124 (119 to 128, 119 to 132): repeat rows 113 and 114 (117 and 118, 117 and 118) 5 (5, 7) more times. Fasten off.

How to knit the sleeves of the men’s sweater

Start from the right sleeve.

With crochet hook n° 3.5 EU / D-3 US and the yarn held double (1 strand of Lagom and 1 strand of Vivienne held together) cast on 35 (35, 39) stitches using the chain cast-on technique. Continue with knitting needles n° 4 EU / 6 US. The instructions now continue separately for the 3 sizes.

How to work the finishing

Sew one shoulder seam. For the neckband, with knitting needles n° 4 EU / 6 US and the yarn held double (1 strand of Lagom and 1 strand of Vivienne held together) pick up stitches all around the front and back neckline (the final number of stitches must be even). Work 6 rows in 1x1 rib, then fasten off. Sew the other shoulder and the neckband. Set in the sleeves over 23 (24, 25) cm / 9" (9.4", 9.8") before and after the shoulder seam, corresponding to the armhole. Sew sleeve seams and side seams.
