How to knit a sweater with ruffles

Hey you, did you say ruffles? During a gray winter, nothing lifts your mood more than an outfit featuring a cozy sweater enhanced with two playful ruffles on the shoulders!

Start this pattern right away, but first, choose the color of the N.5 yarn that you like the most because this is the yarn used to make the sweater. Warm because it contains alpaca, shiny because it has some lamé, and it celebrates one of the most iconic and refined designers of all time, Gabrielle Chanel.

METHOD

The sweater is knitted flat and consists of 4 pieces: the back, the front, and the sleeves. The neckline border is knitted after sewing the 3 raglan armholes.

How to knit the back of the sweater

With knitting needles n° 6 EU / 10 US, cast on 66 (70, 74) stitches.

Row 1: repeat (2 knit stitches, 2 purl stitches) until the last 2 stitches, knit the last 2 stitches
row 2: purl the first 2 stitches, repeat (2 knit stitches, 2 purl stitches) until the end of the row
rows 3 and 4: repeat rows 1 and 2.

Continue in stockinette stitch for 62 (60, 60) rows, which equals 33 (32, 32) cm / 13" (12.6", 12.6") from the bottom edge.

Row 67 (65, 65): bind off the first 5 (3, 3) stitches for the armhole, knit until the end of the row
row 68 (66, 66): bind off the first 5 (3, 3) stitches for the armhole, purl until the end of the row
row 69 (67, 67): knit the first 2 stitches, decrease 1 stitch for the raglan armhole by working 1 simple decrease over the next 2 stitches, knit until the last 4 stitches, decrease 1 stitch for the raglan armhole by knitting 2 stitches together, knit the last 2 stitches
row 70 (68, 68): purl

Rows 69 and 70 (67 and 68, 67 and 68) set the stockinette stitch with raglan armhole decreases, repeat for another 16 (19, 20) times. For size L only, knit 2 more rows in stockinette stitch without decreases: reach row 102 (106, 110), which equals 19 (22, 24) cm / 7.5" (8.7", 9.4") from the start of the raglan armhole shaping, with 22 (24, 26) stitches on the needle. Bind off the work.

How to knit the front of the sweater with ruffles

With knitting needles n° 6 EU / 10 US, cast on 66 (70, 74) stitches and, for the lower border, work 4 rows in 2/2 rib as explained for the back.

Rows 69 and 70 (67 and 68, 67 and 68) set the stockinette stitch with raglan armhole decreases, repeat for another 12 (15, 17) times, reaching row 94 (98, 102), which equals 15 (18, 20) cm / 6" (7", 8") from the start of the raglan armhole shaping.

Row 95 (99, 103): knit the first 2 stitches, decrease 1 stitch for the raglan armhole by working 1 simple decrease over the next 2 stitches, knit 2 (2, 1) stitches, bind off the next 18 (20, 22) stitches for the neckline, knit 2 (2, 1) stitches, decrease 1 stitch for the raglan armhole by knitting 2 stitches together, knit the last 2 stitches
row 96 (100, 104): purl the 5 (5, 4) stitches on the second side. Now continue only on this second side, leaving the stitches from the first side on a stitch holder
row 97 (101, 105): bind off 2 stitches for the neckline, knit the remaining stitches
row 98 (102, 106): purl.

Bind off the work.

Rejoin the work on the first side stitches and work as the second side, but in reverse.

How to knit the sleeves of the sweater

Start with the right sleeve. With knitting needles n° 6 EU / 10 US, cast on 24 (28, 28) stitches and, for the cuff, work 2/2 rib for 8 rows, which equals 4 cm / 1.6".

row 124 (126, 128): purl.

Bind off the work.

Work the left sleeve as described for the right sleeve, but in reverse.

How to make the finishes

Make a ruffle on the upper part of each sleeve, corresponding to the 13th (15th, 17th) row from the top. For each ruffle, with knitting needles n° 6 EU / 10 US, pick up 14 (16, 16) central stitches, knit 1 row in purl, then in the next row, knit increasing the number of stitches by knitting 2 times each stitch, the first time as knit and the second time as twisted knit. Knit 1 row in purl, then in the next row, evenly increase 12 stitches. Knit 1 row in purl, 1 row in knit, and 1 row in purl, then bind off the work. Sew the free ends of each ruffle to the corresponding side edges. Sew 3 of the 4 raglan armholes. For the neckline border, with knitting needles n° 6 EU / 10 US, pick up stitches around the neckline of the front and back (the final number of stitches should be even). Work 2 rows in 1/1 rib and 2 rows in tubular stitch, then bind off the stitches with the yarn needle in knit stitch. Sew the last raglan armhole and the neckline border. Close the underarm and side seams.
